Terrific Tuesday, 4/27

Happy Tuesday, Everyone!

This week is already off to a fast start and we are getting a lot done! Now that there are only 17 school days left, the days seem to just fly by! Thanks to everyone for sticking with the material and working hard - there is still a lot to do and a lot to learn.

The book study portion of our author study on Eric Carle is complete; we will continue to work on the writing section. We now have five pieces of writing on Eric Carle. We will work over the next several days to combine them into one essay. When we are finished we will have a book on the Wonderful World of Eric Carle. It will contain guided reading activities as well as the essay. The kids have worked so hard on this author study and I am so excited to see the finished product!

Our study of measurement is going well. Today we learned about linear measurements, measurements of weight and measurements of volume and capacity. We will work over the next few days on practicing how to take these types of measurement. Parents - be sure to ask your students what they know about measurement!

Parents - Thanks so much for the snack and baby wipe donations! The students and I are so appreciative for all of your generosity!

Last week 4 students received a prize for being the first 4 students to correctly all the questions on my blog. Who will get the prizes this time? Please comment on this blog entry with your name and the responses to the questions. Please make sure your answers are in complete sentences. Good Luck!

Have a great week!
Mrs. Johnston

  1. 1. The three types of measurements that we learned about are capacity, length, and weight. For length it is how long something is. For weight it is how something heavy is. Capacity is how something you can hold. You can use a scale for weight. For length you can use a ruler. For capacity you can use a cylinder.

    2. Inference means like you guess for something. It can help you with comprehension by filling in the blanks of stuff that the speaker doesn't say. An example was when the grouchy ladybug said go away!

    3. Text to text connections mean when you text in something else like a book or a movie. Once we read "The Mixed Up Chameleon" by Eric Carle" and "Junie B. Jones" and "The Mixed Up Chameleon" it always changed to different stuff so you've got to trust yourself. And in Junie B. Jones she cut off her hair and didn't like it.

    4. If you are trying to make a new book and you don't know what you want to say just think of what you want to say or do. You could practice visualization in Science and people ask what are the seven continents and you could answer well here are the continents that you try to remember in your head like a picture on a TV screen.

    5. We're learning about measurement. There are 3 types of measurements that we studied. There are a lot of things to measure all around. You're going to be measurement experts soon! What would you like to measure in our classroom?

I would like to measure the wall.

  2. 1. Linear, weight, volume/capacity. Linear measurements are for how long or tall or far something is. You measure that in miles, meters, inches, yards and feet. Like when you measure how long a table is. Then volume is for how much is inside of something like a can or a box and you can measure that in gallons. And then three is weight, l like how heavy something is, like a book or me. That's in pounds or ounces.

    2. Inference is when you see something or hear it and then you guess about something because of what you just saw. When the caterpillar was in his cocoon I could tell was he was turning into a butterfly.

    3. Text to text connection means if you read something in one book and then read another book that has something similar. Then you connect the two books. Like when I read the Very Hungry Caterpillar where he gets very fat from eating too much and then in Wayside School two of the Erics they are big.

    4. Sometimes I visualize fractions for math like 1/4 of a pizza and then I color in one piece of the pizza in my head that's 1/4.

  3. Mrs. Johnston,
    I made two mistakes.

    1. The types of measurements we learned about are linear, weight and volume/capacity.

    5. I'd like to measure the cubbies.

  4. 1. The three types of measurements are: linear, weight and capicity. Linear involves length, weight is used to measure how heavy or light something is and capicity is how much volume soemthing holds. In linear you use a ruler, in weight you can use a scale and capicity you can use a measuring cup.

    2. Interference is when you figure out something that wasn't stated. In The Tiny Seed, the seed grows from a seed to a flower and you can figure out how it happens.

3.Text connection is when you connect to another book. Eric Carle's The Very Hungry
Caterpillar has a text connection to The Monarch by Gail Gibbons. They were both about caterpillars and how they grew into butterflies.

    4. We could use visulization in Math. For example, if you don't know the answer to a problem, you could visualize the answer using objects.

    5. We're learning about measurements. There are 4 types of measurements that we studied. There are a lot of things to measure all around. You're going too be measurement experts soon! What would you like to measure in our classroom?

I would like to measure the word wall.

  5. 1. We learned about linear measurements, measurements of weight and measurements of volume and capacity. The units used in linear include meter, decimeter, kilometer, yard, foot and mile. The units used in weight include kilogram, pound, ounce and ton. The units used in volume and capacity include liter, milliliter, cup, pint, quart and gallon. An example of when to use linear measurement is when finding the perimeter of a picture frame. An example of when to use weight measurement is when you want to know how much heavier your sister weighs than you. An example of when to use volume and capacity is when you want to know how much juice fits in a glass cup.

    2. Inference means when you figure out something in the story that the author did not tell you. It can help with comprehension because it helps you make connections and fill in the blanks to what the author doesn’t tell you. I used inference when we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The caterpillar had to eat a lot so that he could turn in a butterfly.

    3. Making text to text connections mean when a person reading something makes a connection with something they read before. I made a text to text connection between The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and Jonathan Jasper Jeremy Jones by Bernice C. Holland. They both are stories about a caterpillar who turned into a butterfly at the end.

4 Yes I can practice visualization when in math class. For example, when I’m reading a word problem I could picture the objects in my head and it helps me find the answer.

    5. We’re learning about measurement. There are three types of measurement that we are studying. There are a lot of things to measure all around. You’re going to be measurement experts soon! What would you like to measure in our classroom? I would like to measure the door.

  6. I need to make a correction for #5.

There are 3 types of measurement that we learned about. The sentence should say You're going TO be measurement experts.
