Friday Is Our Favorite Day!

Happy Weekend, Everyone!

Once again, this week flew by! There are just 14 more school days left and the month of May will be action packed!

We had a busy week learning about measurement, Eric Carle & Shel Silverstein, contractions, trouble shooting & problem solving and the character pillars of caring and respect. In math we did an in depth study of linear and capacity/volume measurements. Kids - be sure to tell your parents about our macaroni experiments and what you learned about cylinders.

We moved on to the essay portion of our Eric Carle author study. We will combine our daily writings from the book study into one five paragraph essay. The kids are learning to use their notes from each day to create one piece of writing.

We began our author study of Shel Silverstein this week. We are learning about the writing traits of word choice and voice and how they help convey meaning in a poem. We read Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out to learn about the importance of using "juicy words" in writing. Parents - ask your child to tell you a sentence with lots of juicy words!

We continue to study contractions and I am excited to see the children using them in their writing! Kids - you're doing a great job with your contractions! It's great to see! You'll be contraction experts in no time!!! (Get it?!?)

We had quite an adventure in the computer lab today! I went over to the lab before class and created some problems with the computers! When the kids got there, they found out that computers were off, monitors wouldn't come on and the mice wouldn't work! When the kids tried to log in, they immediately turned to me and they were greeted with the response, "Problem Solve!" It was so exciting to try to watch the kids to figure the problems out on their own. We learned about the importance of problem solving. Kids - be sure to tell your parents what you did today and what you learned.

We studied the character pillars of caring and respect and we focused on demonstrating them both in and out of our classroom. We spent a few minutes each day writing positive notes to each other. The kids came home today with a bag of notes from everyone in the class and from me. The kids really enjoyed this exercise!

A big THANK YOU to the 5 children who correctly answered all the questions on my blog this week. I hope you enjoy your prizes! :) This week 5/25 children participated; next week I hope that 25/25 (or 1 WHOLE class) will be up for the challenge. Be sure to check my blog early in the week and see if you can answer all the questions.

Have a great weekend!

Problem Solving!!!

Everyone was excited to come back to computers after a missed week due to MAP testing. When we got to the computer lab, something was very different! What was it? What did you do about it?

Today's activity was a little bit different than normal. Please comment on this post about your time in the computer lab today.

1. What was different about computers today?
2. What did you do about the difference?
3. What are some ways that you practiced problem solving today?

If AFTER you post your comment on the blog you STILL have time, you may visit one of the following sites. Have fun!

Terrific Tuesday, 4/27

Happy Tuesday, Everyone!

This week is already off to a fast start and we are getting a lot done! Now that there are only 17 school days left, the days seem to just fly by! Thanks to everyone for sticking with the material and working hard - there is still a lot to do and a lot to learn.

The book study portion of our author study on Eric Carle is complete; we will continue to work on the writing section. We now have five pieces of writing on Eric Carle. We will work over the next several days to combine them into one essay. When we are finished we will have a book on the Wonderful World of Eric Carle. It will contain guided reading activities as well as the essay. The kids have worked so hard on this author study and I am so excited to see the finished product!

Our study of measurement is going well. Today we learned about linear measurements, measurements of weight and measurements of volume and capacity. We will work over the next few days on practicing how to take these types of measurement. Parents - be sure to ask your students what they know about measurement!

Parents - Thanks so much for the snack and baby wipe donations! The students and I are so appreciative for all of your generosity!

Last week 4 students received a prize for being the first 4 students to correctly all the questions on my blog. Who will get the prizes this time? Please comment on this blog entry with your name and the responses to the questions. Please make sure your answers are in complete sentences. Good Luck!

Friday Is Our Favorite Day!

Happy Weekend, Everyone!

It was another fast week in second grade! It's hard to believe that it will be May next week and that there are less than 20 days of school left! We are half way done with our MAP testing; our MAP testing will be complete on Monday when we take the math test. Today we did math centers to help prepare for the MAP test. We focused on multiplication and division concepts. The kids came home with some of the practice sheets for these concepts. They are well prepared for Monday's test!

We are off to a great start with measurement! We have learned about several units of measurement such as inches, centimeters, yards and meters. We have learned how to measure a variety of items and we have also learned what tools to use. We learned about perimeter and how to find it. Kids - be sure to tell your parents what the fastest way to find it! Next week we will learn about additional units of measurement. We will also learn how to measure weight and volume and how to find area.

Our Eric Carle author study is going well! We have learned all about Eric Carle as a person, a graphic designer, an author and an illustrator. Our focus is on the comprehension strategy of visualization. We have learned how visualization can help us create images in our mind, think about and beyond text, make text to text connections and make text to self connections. Our author study will continue next week and we will learn how visualization can help us create additional dialogue for stories. We wrote about Eric Carle each day and these writing will be combined into a paper all about Eric Carle.

We had a lot of fun learning all about contractions! We are working to create a contraction chart with all the contraction categories. These will be a great resource to the kids to use in their writing. Contractions can be tricky and I am impressed with how hard the kids are working to learn them!

A big THANK YOU to the 4 children who correctly answered all the questions on my blog this week! I hope you enjoy your prizes :)! Thank you to all the children who participated! This week 7/25 children participated. Next week I hope that 25/25 children (or 1 WHOLE class!) will be up for the challenge! Be sure to check my blog early in the week and see if you can answer all the questions!

Our classroom is neat and clean and ready for next week! It's so clean that we are almost out of baby wipes; we use these to clean the surfaces in the room. We are also almost out of snacks. If anyone could donate some baby wipes and healthy snacks, that would be wonderful! Thank you so much for your generosity and support over the last few months!

Have a great weekend!

Terrific Tuesday, 4/20

Happy Tuesday, Everyone!

We're having a fun and busy week in second grade! Our first round of MAP testing is complete; we will take the second part next week. Next week's MAP test is math.

We began our author study on Eric Carle this week. Each day in guided reading we will read to learn about Eric Carle and then study one of his books. We are using Eric Carle's books to help strengthen the comprehension strategy of visualization. We have learned many interesting things about Eric Carle already! We studied The Very Hungry Caterpillar on Monday and today we studied The Very Clumsy Click Beetle. We are working on making an Eric Carle author study book! Our book will contain activities from our guided reading exercises, as well as pieces of writing about Eric Carle and his books. Kids - I specifically chose to study Eric Carle this week. Do you remember why??? Tell your parents!

We began our Chapter 9 study of measurement on Monday. We are learning about both nonstandard and standard units of measure. We even measured the length of our classroom in second graders! Our Fraction Museum has been replaced by our Measures All Around Museum. The kids have brought in some great examples of measurement in everyday life!

We continue to study different varieties of contractions! Tomorrow we will make charts to help us remember the different categories of contractions. Aren't you excited? You're going to do a great job! It's going to be fun! (Get it??? :))

Last week 5 students received a special prize for being the first 5 students to correctly answer the questions on my blog. Who will get the prizes this time? Please comment on this blog entry with your name with your responses to the questions. Please make sure your answers are in complete sentences. Good Luck!

Our study of weather is almost complete. Everyone did a great job on the Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs study! This week we studied about clouds, storms and some of the more wild elements of weather. We read several weather related books and we used the Smart Board to read about weather.

This week was a super week for writing! We worked on our 4th quarter assessment, edited our weather acrostic poems and we had several Writers' Workshops to practice our editing skills. The second graders did an awesome job of focusing on the six traits of writing and doing their very best work. Well done!

We continued to work on fractions, and we will finish our study next week. We spent a lot of time learning about equivalent fractions. They can be tricky, so remember to use the tools you have. And, as always, it's about thinking, not guessing!

Stanford 10 Testing is next week on Monday and Tuesday. We worked on test taking strategies, skills for success and we took practice tests. Throughout the week, your children brought home several practice tests. These tests covered reading, language and math. The format of the tests helped the kids get into the test taking frame of mind and give them practice with bubbling test sheets. Everyone did a super job staying focused and doing their best!

There will be no homework or new spelling lists next week. We will have Home Links, and those will begin on Tuesday. Be sure to check back on my blog and look at the 5 questions early in the week!!!
