Terrific Tuesday, 5/4

Happy Tuesday, Everyone!

THANK YOU to all my wonderful students for the beautiful pink flowers, the thoughtful cards, letters and poems and for your encouraging words! You are all making Teacher Appreciation Week so special for me! I am truly touched by your kindness. I appreciate all of YOU! You are the sweetest second graders around!

Our first week of May is off to a fun and busy start! There are just 12 more school days left. Can you believe it???

Yesterday and today we took a quick break from our Shel Silverstein author study and Eric Carle five paragraph essay. Our guided reading and writing focused on Mother's Day! We learned all about the history of Mother's Day and how Mother's Day is celebrated on the 7 continents. Our writing activities this week will have to remain secret until Sunday! Moms - your kids have been working hard in writing to make your day extra special!

Tomorrow we pick up with our Shel Silverstein author study. Our focus in guided reading is on the trait of voice and how it creates meaning in a poem. Tomorrow in writing we will work on finishing the 3rd paragraph of our Eric Carle five paragraph essay. We will also have time to finish our super secret Mother's Day projects! It should be a Wonderful Wednesday!

We finished our study of measurement today. We practiced weighing objects around our classroom using a variety of different scales. The children were introduced to new scales today; we learned about food scales, balance scales and spring and hook scales. Kids - be sure to tell your parents what we learned! Tomorrow will be a review day for chapter 9 and our test is on Thursday. We will jump right into chapter 10 on Friday and we will be busy mathematicians over the next 12 days of school!

It's the last call for BOX TOPS!!! Please bring in your box tops tomorrow, Wednesday, May 5. This will be the last collection for the year. Thank you for your participation this year!

We are in the final push! Let's keep working hard until the end!

Last week 5 students received a prize for being the first 5 students to correctly answer all the questions on my blog. Who will get the prizes this time? Please comment on THIS BLOG ONLY with your name and responses to the questions. Please make sure your answers are in complete sentences. Good Luck!

Have a super week!
Mrs. Johnston

  1. 1. Two types of scales are a food scale and a bath/body scale. A food scale can tell you how much food you are eating. A bath scale can tell you how much you weigh. A food manufacturer would find the food scale useful and a doctor would find a bath scale useful. There are many different types of scales because there are so many differnt kinds of material to weigh.

    2. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother and other mothers as she felt grown children did not appreciate everything moms do. It's important to me because my mom works so hard for us and I want to work hard for her.

    3. Yes. We are making flowers and it gave me a connection to an outside flower that can be picked.
    4. It is important in juiced up words. It is important in story telling. For example, instead of using "apple", use the words "yucky, gross, diagusting apple."

    5. Measuring weight by feel is not the most accurate way to measure. A food scale can not measure an elephant. Scales do not tell us how long something is. All scales can not weigh the same things. You're doing a good job learning about weight.

I would like to measure a desk.

  2. 1. The food scale would be helpful for measuring food to stay healthy. People who use food scales are moms, dads, and grandmas. A bathroom scale would be helpful to weigh a person. Every person can weigh themselves. We have different scales for different things. Different things have different measurements and sizes.

    2. Anna Jarvis made mother’s day because she thought about all that moms do for us. Mother’s day is important for me because I thought it would be nice to give my mom a break by helping her.

    3. Yes. One was about thinking about mothers, like my mom. Another was caring and loving each other.

    4. In stories, books, science, and singing. There is an apple. There was a shiny, red, juicy apple.

    5. Measuring weight by feel is not the most accurate way to measure. A food scale can measure food. Scales tell us how much something weighs. All scales do not weigh the same kinds of things. You are doing a good job learning about weight.
What would you like to measure in our class? I would like to measure the computer.

  4. 1. We learned about bathroom scales which are helpful to find out how much people weigh and they use them at my doctor's office. Another scale we talked about was a food scale to weigh food. Mrs. Johnston uses it every day. There are different scales because some things are heavy and some are light, some are big and some are small.

    2. I think Anna Jarvis wanted to do something for mothers because her mom did a lot for her and there was no Mother's Day. Mother's Day is important to me because my mom goes out and plays with me, and every morning and evening she reads with me, she also makes good food and takes care of us when we're sick. And lots of other stuff.

    3. When we read about Mother's Day we read a book about a mother who always checked on her boy whenever he was asleep in his bed and she rocked him. My mom comes over to my bed and checks on me and says thanks for having me.

    4. It's really important to use good words when you write stories and poems. Shel Silverstein uses juicy words to make his poems interesting.

There is a tree by our house that has the very green leaves. I could say the tree has the greenest, juiciest leaves, juicy like lemons.

    5. Measuring weight by feel is not an accurate way to measure. A food scale can measure food. Scales tell us how heavy something is. Not all scales can weigh the same things. You're doing a good job learning about weight. What would you like to weigh in our classroom? I'd like to weigh our supply basket.

  5. The two types of scales are a food scale and a scale you weigh yourself. How the food scale is helpful is that it helps to measure turkey to put into a sndwich. The weighing scale then helps you to weigh yourself. My mom would use one for baking and the doctor for weighing people. There are many types so they can help people every day.
