What a fun week we had! Mrs. Hicks had a great time in our busy beehive and she said she would love to be our guest teacher again. The kids got a great report from Mrs. Hicks. I am happy but I am not surprised! :)
The kids loved learning about pumpkins! On Tuesday the kids did a combination science/math experiment. They learned about pumpkin seeds and then estimated and graphed their guesses for the number of seeds in a pumpkin. After the estimation it was time for the fun and messy part! Each table worked together to count the number of seeds in groups of 10. There were 477 seeds all together! On Wednesday the kids learned about the uses of pumpkin seeds. After that, the kids used the seeds from Tuesday to plant their own pumpkin seeds to begin the pumpkin life cycle. Kids - be sure to tell your parents what will help your pumpkin seed grow! On Thursday the kids learned about the history of Jack - O - Lanterns and they got to make their own Jack - O - Lantern!
The kids did a great job in math and they made a lot of progress with adding and patterning. We even had time for some math races and the kids loved that!
Our Halloween Party was a blast! THANK YOU so much to all the parents who donated their time and supplies to make the party great! We had 5 Halloween centers at our party and the kids got to do all 5. The centers for the party were:
1. Spider Glyph - The kids make a spooky spider glyph. They turned out so cute!
2. Grapefruit Carving - The kids carved grapefruits with plastic knives to turn them into Jack - O - Grapefruits.
3. Owl Puppet - The kids colored an owl pattern, cut it out and glued it on a paper bag to make a cute puppet.
4. Mini Pumpkin Decorating - The kids decorated mini pumpkins with googly eyes, gems, colored cotton balls and markers.
5. Cookie Decorating - Yum!
The Halloween parade was so much fun! Everyone looked so great in costume! The kids had such a great time with this!
Get excited for next week...we are learning about brilliant bats!

Get To Know Your Teacher!
I am so excited to be back at Harelson with this awesome group of first grade students!
I am from the Great State of Michigan - GO BLUE!!! I grew up in Bloomfield Hills, a city north of Detroit. I lived in Michigan until I went to college. My BA is from Denison University in Granville, Ohio - GO BIG RED! Mr. Johnston and I met in college and we even got married at Denison! I moved to Arizona in the summer of 2007 and I absolutely love my home in Tucson! I have my M.Ed. from Northern Arizona University - GO LUMBERJACKS!
My parents live in Tucson too and it is great to be near them. My mom makes many of the neat bees and decorations in our room and she likes to come in and read to my students.
Mr. Johnston and I have two adorable and funny miniature schnauzers named Sophie Pink and Lilly Rose. They want to meet all of my first graders! You will get to know all about Sophie Pink and Lilly Rose and their fun adventures! And, you will even get to meet them one day!
This year is going to be an exciting year for us because in addition to our 'fur-kids,' we are expecting our first child, a little boy, due January 28, 2013! We can hardly wait!
I love my family, playing with Sophie Pink and Lilly Rose, reading, exercise, baking, the color PINK and teaching, of course!! Being healthy and active are very important to me. I am a marathon runner and I run all around Oro Valley, so be sure to wave if you see me running! I also workout at CrossFit and I absolutely love it! Kids do CrossFit WODs (workout of the day) every day in class. Exercise warms up your brain and gets you ready to learn! Exercise makes you strong and healthy. Exercise is fun!
I love BEES! Bees are amazing little creatures because they have big bodies and tiny, thin little wings. They should not be able to fly, but each day they take flight and do great things. Isn't that cool?!?! Bees are smart too! Bees created their very own special dance language to talk to each other. Isn't that neat?!?! I think all of my students are like bees - they can do anything! I believe that all my students will achieve great things.
